Hi all,

I've been thinking about using something like RealVNC on our two Myriad PCs to remotely control them. I have thought about Microsoft's own RDP, but as far as I can tell, you need to log into the computer as another user, and therefore don't get to see what is on screen.

I've used RealVNC in the past, on a Myriad setup running Myriad 2 (IIRC), and on a 100baseT network and it was too much for the system, resulting in the audio being played out being interrupted. Just wondering now, about 5 years later, whether things would have improved enough. The network is a gigabit network with two Windows 7 machines running Myriad 3.6.

Cheers,

Gerald.

We use RealVNC to remotely control all our Myriad playout PCs at Erewash Sound and it works fine. We use LogMeIn for remote support as well and have audio issues.

VNC is fine - and bandwidth shouldn't be an issue - after all, the "client" end will typically be at the other end of a DSL line. You can set various options in vnc to limit the bandwidth required.

One good thing about vnc is that it's display only - it doesn't mess around with the audio.

In an emergency, I've used windows remote desktop - but make sure you don't select the "redirect audio" options! You can "steal" the session from the locally logged-in user, but they then get a locked screen - so no use for remote interactive support. I vaguely remember it caused some issues with Myriad due to screen resizing.

Gents,

Logmein is good - HOWEVER don't use the PRO version as it replaces the end soundcard with a virtual driver, thus stealing it away from Myriad Mid-flow and this can cause awful problems. We have not yet found a way to disable this in their paid for product.

This problem can also happen with RDP, you need to be carefull when setting up the connection properties. As has been noted above, you'll need to log on as the same user that is already logged in, and that then will lock the screen to the local user, so you won't be able to show someone what's happening (as is useful for technical support).

VNC is fine and shouldn't cause too many problems, however it is open source and there are several implementations, as with all of these things you need to make sure you are on the most up to date version as vunerabilities in security can be much easier to exploit on open source software.

Dameware - we have been using for a number of years and is onto version 7 - couple of little niggles with this latest version and Windows 7, but does have file transfer and remote control - this is a paid for product.

Teamviewer, gotomypc, gotoassist etc all have their pros and cons - we haven't been able to evaluate in depth the impact on all of these options.

Hope this helps.

Hi - we use VNC to control Myriad and it works well without causing interruptions.

Thanks,

  • Hi, we use Logmein free on all our studio computers and it works fine.  Interested in David's reply as we have one Win7 machine with Logmein Pro on it.  We have Myriad set to use a Delta 1010 card ( or did have until it blew up after 3 months! ) but the Myriad editing screen and Autotrack are set to use the internal sound card on the computer.  This gets taken by Logmein Pro so we can work on Autotrack remotely and all seems ok.  We have found you cannot edit, ie, top and tail, audio via Logmein as there is a delay between the screen and audio so cannot edit accurately.
  • Hope this helps.

Hi all,

Thank you for all your replies - I think I'll be giving it a try. But first, I need to work out some network solution so that I can access the Myriad machines from home via VNC, but nothing else online can (or Myriad PCs can access internet) - this'll be a subject for another thread here.

Many thanks,

Gerald.

If using Windows 7 PC's/SVR2008, tightVNC is free.
