Hi there

We're running our sustain service on one PC and run the audiowall on another PC connecting to the audio directory on the sustain PC. We run our sustain 24/7 even when someone is doing a live show, just in case someone doesn't turn up. When using both the audiowall and the sustain together we get the occasional crash. We're also running a 1G Lan

My concern is about simultaneous access to the MSaccess database from both the audiowall and the sustain.

Both PC's are fairly meaty and have plenty of RAM

Does this setup seem acceptable?

regards

Chris

hi Chris,

There should be no problems at all with leaving the sustain machine running if the live show is done from the Audiowall, as you are not really accessing the Database at all doing this.

If presenters are using the Audiowall to choose music, but are then modifying the play list in the Log, then this may cause problems, but only if you have somehow set both machines to always be On Air.

Regards,

Andrew

Thanks Andrew

The only thing I've done different recently is voice track a show later in the day.

I'll do some more tests but might be overheating or its an old machine. It is over 4 years old now!.

Having multiple machines all accessing the same audio wall and system directory would be what I'd call the 'standard' set-up. All reading the same databases shouldn't be an issue - it's designed to work like that (though in Myriad v2.6 you can edit the log that's about to be played from another machine which could cause crashes - but v3+ is designed to avoid this issue)

In my experience having one of your studio pcs (or in your case the 'sustain studio') computer also being the file server works fine most of the time - though of course all things being equal having a separate 'server' does has some advantages.

If your "file server" workstation goes down - your whole system goes down - you can't even operate from a second studio (and if your studio come file server machine is going to die it'll probably do so on a Bank Holiday given my experience).

As for the original posters crashes - is it Myriad that is crashing, or windows that's crashing?

Thanks guys for your responses. I thought it was normal setup.

Myriad has been the one crashing not the server. Its crashed twice in little over a month and thats without any reboots. Had to rebuild the RAID on both occasions.

cheers

Hi Chris,

As a general rule Software apps can't cause a RAID array to need rebuilding - certainly Myriad can't because it operatetes entirely above the hardware layer so only interacts with Windows, not with the drives themselves.

It sounds like you may have either a Raid controller/driver issue or possibly a failing hard disk.
