When we first got our Galleon serial port radio clock receiver a number of years ago we had a number of intermittent problems with it.
On investigation we found that the soldering on the module was rather poor.
In particular the aerial wires which require proper soldering with a hot iron to melt the enamel covering had not been and the aerial measured open circuit.
After redoing these (and going over the other joints) we have had no further problems with it.
Not saying this is the problem, but it might be worth a try before it heads to the bin.

One of the guys here tried it in a different PC and it was the same. He then took it to bits, re-inserted the same batteries and tried again and it's now ok! So who knows. No more sloppy news!

Hi,

It seems that since our hardware upgrade, the radio clock is not updating the time on the PC. First, I don't know if it is a \"Galleon\" - I have been on their website, and our box doesn't look anything like the ones they sell now. It is white and grey, about 15cm x 8cm x 4cm and has the letters \"HOPF\" and \"HKW\" on it - no other identifying marks. When I go into Myriad Manager and use the \"test\" button for the serial clock, it says signal strength is zero. What do you recommend? Do we have to buy a new one?

By your description it doesn't sound like the standard Galleon Serial time and date unit, which is the size of a Mars bar and grey, but it could the Galleon Clock Mouse. These are usually grey and have a map of Europe on the front with a single led which pulses when working.

If this is the case, then Myriad does not talk directly to this type of unit, and you will need to install the Galleon software to get the PC to connect to it.

If you don't have either of these units, then I don't know what model you have. Sorry :?

It does have a map of Europe on it... so where do I get the software? I've looked on http://www.galleon.eu.com but can't find anything about a \"clock mouse\" I will try emailing them, but if anyone has the software I would really appreciate help. Our clock is drifting really badly.

I don't know if this discussion has been resolved but I have had a problem with time sync but now I've finally sorted it at last.  If you require software 'Galleon' supply it called "timesync ntp", which is an application and service.  This works on all of our pc's on our local net.  The timesysnc software supports all types of radio clocks, just select from the list.

The rugby clock which is connected to our reception computer has a signal strength of at least 90% - 100% all other areas in our building cannot get a signal above 40%.  I have disabled myriad from reading the time via config as the computer is not always using myriad as this would also make the time drift.  The PC reads the clock via TimeSync software then transmits it to the other computers on the subnet and IP addresses.  All the other computers also have timesync installed to read the tymesync from reception via the IP address.

If you'd like to know anymore please contact me.

Now we have moved to new studios the signal on the galleon 'mars bar' receiver is low. Has anyone extended one successfully on the end of a serial cable and how far have you been able to get? Could I extend is by 5 metres or will it just not work at all after that?

any thoughts welcome.

It's not because of the recent move of the MSF site from Rugby to Anthorn is it?  http://www.npl.co.uk/time/msf/

They moved at the start of April, and since then we've noticed substantial reduction in signal strength (in Swansea), so you'd probably experience similar problems in Chelmsford

I currently have three ASC clocks and one Canford one sitting in my office waiting to re-sync...

Extending the Serial cable has differing results i'm afraid - because the clock is powered internally there is not a problem with juice. However i cant conclusivley say that extending it has improved the signal strength. This is because it differs from building to building.

It's a worth a go if it's your only time sync source - a lot of stations now use an NTP service.

if you have a PC with 2 network cards, that acts as the bridge between Myriad and the InterNet, then that PC can act as a time server (you can set Windows to update time from an Internet source - you may need to have your firewall opened to allow this), follow the instructions on the following FAQ (replacing the Rugby Clock with the NetTime PC)

Extending the radio clocks cable was a trick that a lot of stations used to do a while back.

Mercury down in Crawley extended by about 10 metres to a waterproof sealed box on the outside of the building as this gave them the best signal. They also wired in a "wall-wart" to power it as having to climb up the side of the building to change the batteries was a bit of a pain!

The longest extensions that I know of are University Radio Hull who extended by about 25 metres (and claimed that it was still reliable) and Lite AM in Manchester (RIP) that extended to the top of the metalised glass office building they were in - probably a similar distance.

Thats not to say it's guaranteed to work, but it doesn't hurt to try as the cable would be quite cheap from Maplin
