We are having problems with our galleon rugby clock which connects via a com port. In myriad config we use test and we are getting nothing on the signal front whereas before we got at least 60%. Sometimes when I test the clock it says 'com port already open' so I change the com port it is plugged into and then test it in the other one.

Have replaced batteries but still not getting anything. Do I have to wait a while before testing signal strength?

Matt

For reasons best known only to Galleon, they only do a complete \"sync\" to rugby at half past the hour (as long as they have a good signal strength).

Plus, it doesn't start trying to sync until a piece of software has asked it for the time - i.e. Myriad

This means that the first time you plug it in and run up myriad you won't get a time sync until the first (or maybe second if the signal isn't quite there) half past.

If you are using Myriad config to test the clock then you must quit Myriad before you load config - never a good idea to run them at the same time.

In v2.6 though you can test the clock in myriad by double clicking on the powernet server icon in the system tray and you can then turn on the signal strength meter to test. Don't leave this on though as it will drain the battery and Myriad can't get time info from the clock while it's in signal strength mode.

According to http://www.npl.co.uk/time/

MSF is off the air from 09:00 BST, Monday 20 September 2004 until 09:00 BST, Monday 4 October 2004.

Which will explain nicely why you are getting no signal!

Incedently our gelleon clock has been reporting low battery for about a year now and it still works. One of these days I might remember to fit a new one.

Hi Matt

Not a good time to replace the batteries, Rugby is off the air (from Monday) for maintenance until the 4th of October – see their web www.npl.co.uk.

They say they will try to get back on air overnight, but can't guarantee it.

We're having a new set of problems with our clock now - basically it's as if it's not there - ie the time is starting to drift in that way that one expects from PC clocks!

The signal strength being reported is in the green though.

Any ideas? I've tried rebooting the PC and re-installing Myriad (v2.6.26) but to no avail. Is this likely to be hardware failure?

It could be a hardware issue, but first thing to do would be to change the batteries - might sound daft, but it's often the problem :-)

Alas, that was the first thing we did when it started looking a bit dodgy!

In that case it might be a hardware failure yes - if you want to send it over I can run a few tests on it here for you.

We're going to try it in one of the other PC's to see if that's the problem. If not I'll be in touch! Can you remind me what the replacement value of these things is?
