By default Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 don’t have Windows Media installed as part of the default installation.

The problem is that when you use the "Audio Format Chooser" dialog in any of our products (for example when setting the Audio Format for Myriad to use) it will fail to open and may cause the application to exit because it can’t access any of the Windows Media Format options.

This is a particular problem with Myriad Remote Edit Server because it uses Windows Media for the audio transfer between RES and RVT. If you run this on 2008 it will load and run but fail to create any preview versions to transfer to the RVT clients.

The good news is that this is easily fixed: you just need to add the “Desktop Experience Feature” in "Add Features" and then reboot (twice in some cases!) and it then works fine. This is because it installs (amongst other things) the Windows Media Player and associated runtimes.
