That at least is an easy one :-)

We call a function in windows called CreateProcess which does something similar (though not exactly) to right clicking on an item and choosing the \"action\" option - in this case Open.

This effectively boils down to Windows then executing this command line for us:

\"c:\\Program Files\\Cool2000\\cool2000.exe\" \"m:\\myriad\\audio\\myr12345.wav\"

Obviously the paths may be different :-)

Myriad then sits there polling the Process list looking to see when Cool Edit (or whichever other editor you may be using) is no longer there (i.e. has exited)

At this point myriad then opens the wav file in read only mode to read in the duration of the audio then closes the file. If the length has changed, Myriad then double checks that the extro/intro etc. are all still valid (i.e. not after the length of the audio) and then reopens the file for read/write access, stamps in an updated cartchunk and the closes it.

Finally, you get to edit the detail on the Cart Details to your hearts content Smile

Thanks - just tried that - the one at the top of the list was A/Mu Law Wave, so I deleted the appropriate .flt file. No change to the offending cart - it still thinks it's a DAF file. I then temporarily renamed the APT-DAF flt file, and the offending file opened fine as a WAV via Myriad. I can't remove that flt completely, as we wouldn't be able to use the apt-x plug-in that we use to access our old DCS files if we need any.

Before anyone jumps in and says \"aha, must be the APTX Cool Edit plug-in then \", we've never have that installed on the two machines at the other station, and they were doing similar, but with other file extensions (.zip and .txt).

Also, it's early days yet, but since we rolled back to 2.6.23 last Wednesday at the other site, we've not had a recurrence of that problem.

Could someone from P Squared give us an idea (in block terms) of the process that Myriad goes through when passing a file to Cool Edit, and how it's then passed back to Myriad in its edited form, and how Cool Edit decides what format the file should be? It may help us in setting up a procedure to reliably reproduce the problem, which so far has evaded us.

Thanks

Mike

[quote:85228dffe9=\"Mike Winson\"]Following my reply to Matt's posting, I've just seen Phil's posting. Sounds very similar. Are you there, P Squared gurus - could this be related?

This one was caused by the file not being closed completely by the client by the time Cool Edit came to open it. This shouldn't apply in this case because Myriad doesn't do anything with the file when you click edit so doesn't have it open. (When you have finished with Cool, myriad then reads the file to get the timing info etc).

PS - Nice to be called a Guru :-)

Interesting observations, Matt - There are no DAF files anywhere on that PC, except in the separate drive that we keep all our old DCS inventory on for importing as needed, so your solution of deleting a rogue file in your Cool Edit folder can't be applied in our case.

I've just tried a similar scenario with one of our suspect files. Opening the file in Windows Explorer brings it into Cool Edit, but again tries to open it as a DAF file. Files that load OK into Cool Edit from Myriad also load OK via Windows Explorer. Also, as expected, Right-clicking and opening with Media Player plays it OK as a WAV (Media Player has no concept of DAF files) So the audio isn't corrupt in any way, as Media Player or Myriad would throw it out if it was.

So it seems that the need to interpret it as a DAF file is recorded into the suspect file itself, rather than it being on the later transfer to Cool Edit, so what could Myriad 2.6.26 be putting in the header that makes Cool want to treat it as a DAF?

I've seen this happen with an old version of PowerLog client. When saving a selection of log to a wav file, sometimes the progress bar would stick at 100% for ages.

If you tried to open the file in cool edit (can't remember which version in this case) before the progress bar had disapeared in powerlog client - cool edit would try and open it as a 'raw' file. Which would seem to indicate is was something to do with the headers in the wave file not being complete.

The problem was fixed in a later version of Power Log client. (Which may or may not help the PSquared team identify the problem.)

I have come across this problem before. When we select a file in windows explorer and right click on it and select open with cool edit 1.1 it opens it as a .sam file which is an 8-bit format. The format just happens to be at the top of our open files dialog box when you go into cool edit and select open and the use the drop down menu.

Removing sam.flt from the cool edit directory rectifies it and opens it as a .wav.

Also for your info doing the same but selecting adobe audition opens the programme but doesn't open the .wav file at all it just sits there!

hope that helps

p.s. did this at work (BBC WS) so didn't have myriad to try it on.

There's no guarantee that an upgrade to Audition would solve the problem, and to be honest, it seems a bit of a Microsoft-style approach if we were expected to upgrade third-party software to make the prime application work (I know that suggestion hasn't come from P Squared though).

We bought Myriad on the basis that it came bundled with the editor which it was then designed to work with (separately licenced, obviously), and the additional expense of 13 Audition licences wouldn't be acceptable.

The problem doesn't seem to be with Cool Edit itself anyway, as it will open the offending files OK, except when going via Myriad's edit route.
