Remote Voice Tracking - Ends of links missing

Evening -

I'm hoping someone might be able to shed a little light on an issue I've noted with Remote Voice Tracking, being experienced with both 3.5 client/server and 3.6.  Now it seems that this is not affecting all of our VT users, which suggests it's a client-side issue and not a problem at the studio end.

In RVT, voice links are recorded successfully, uploaded, and can be segue-edited.  The audio can be played-back on the VT user's PC and the link is complete.

On the studio side, the audio is generally missing the last 2-3 seconds of audio from the cart that the link has been saved into.  The frustration here is that the VT user has no idea until it's played-out on air, as there are no error messages on the client side.

I originally suspected the issue was with Windows 8.1, but I was able to recreate the problem running the RVT client on my Windows XP laptop.  Wireless connection issues have been ruled out by using an ethernet cable too.  The users experiencing problems are with different ISPs and have been successfully able to RVT without issue up until some point in the last few months.

I've seen some mention of using VPN clients on the forums, but in my opinion that would only help with encryption (an added overhead) and not help to address the underlying issue.

An example link with a missing ending taken from the RVT server logs does not show any errors or failures:

Hi David,

I'd definitely look at connecting via VPN - it will help in 2 areas - first it will "bundle" all of the connections together into a single "tunnel" to the  RVT computer so that the hub can't drop things randomly, but also (and much more importantly!) it is considerably more secure than RVT - The security on the Remote Edit Server was only designed to keep allowed users within their permissions (cart ranges etc,), rather than to prevent malicious users from outside trying to do bad things.

So ideally I would look at enabling a VPN server on your firewall and then you can use normal windows VPN connections to connect securely to your network and run RES over that. The added benefit is that will also then place you "on" the office network, so you can Remote Desktop to admin pc's to do remote work on Autotrack etc Smile
