What Operating System do most stations use?

We use Windows 7 Pro 32bit (as 64bit not officially supported) for all of our machines with Windows 2008 R2 Standard for our data server, this will also host the SQL for Myriad 4 when fully released.

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 32bit on both our Studio PCs, but we have a laptop we use for the backup and this is running Windows XP Professional 32bit.

We currently use XP on all our machines due to them being a bit old.  There are plans to replace them all with Windows 7 pro in the next month or 2.

Interesting - thanks for the replies.

I have to be honest, I thought that the vast majority would be running Windows XP.

As an extension to my original question, what do you guys think of broadcast software that is designed to only run on Windows 7 and future editions?  Is it important to ensure backward compatibility with XP?

Ady

Hi,

For me I would have to say no, all new software as in Myriad 4 should be aimed at Win 7 Pro and upcoming OS's, to keep being backward compatible can make things unstable as it is trying to be the best to all, Win XP and Win 7 have major differences to their OS structures.

So for me Myriad 3.6 should stay backward compatible for a few years and Myriad 4 should be Win 7 and upwards, thereby allowing the software to take advantage of the OS's enhanced features. ;-)

I see from other sources (well known end user website) that Ady is looking to write his very own station playout system, now while that is great for choice I think it is a little naughty of you to come on a potential competitors site and ask its users what they are using! I bet all of those that replied did so in good faith thinking you were either a Myriad user or looking to be one!

I didn't say I was making a station playout system - I said broadcast software by which I meant tools that work with a playout system (such as Myriad).  As you pointed out, I am a Myriad end user with a software hobby.  I *may* venture into playout systems if my initial attempts at other broadcast tools are sucessful but that is a long way off.  So nothing naughty about my post Smile

Hi all,

I'm just being nosey really - I'm interested to know what operating system your station uses for its broadcast/production workstations.  With the support for Windows XP slowly waning (and will eventually disappear completely) what will you use in the future?

Ady
