Solving the screen to server distance problem cheaply

Just had to do this with a Studio relocation project.

We use a USB2.0 over Cat5 for KVM, sender/receiver but this only supported one screen.  For the second screen we used a VGA Extender (Powered) sender/receiver as we had interference with the CAT5/VGA passive adapters.

I don't have the models to hand but the solution works.

Hi
We've got our audiowall touchscreen monitor some 60feet from the server and its connected via an old PC and VNC. Ideally we want to get rid of this but the cost of USB2>cat5 extenders is silly money. Has anyone gone down the route of terminal servers or thin-client solutions. Some are quite cheap. We could get a cheap pc but being a studio we want minimal fan noise.

He he,

Chris has moved on, but for those interested, this was fixed by going old school...

RS-232 touch screens

PS2 Keyboards and Mice

Very long VGA leads

and Some CAT6 tielines terminated into krone blocks, chop the RS-232 and PS2s in half and punch them into the krones, you can send them over great distances, works very reliably!

The only thing to note is that the RS-232 is quite fussy, you'll need to go via function, rather than by colour order, so within a pair TX and RX, CTS & RTS and so on, follow that and all is good.

Just a shame that RS-232 touch screens are not as common as they used to be.
